Dance, non-duality, and Butoh in London with Dominique Savitri Bonarjee
IN PERSON: WEDNESDAYS, 19:30-21:00
TOP STUDIO @ COLET HOUSE
This is the second series of the course. We will continue to work with dance as an inner movement linked to spiritual inquiry and embodied philosophies.
I call this method ‘Butoh Mutations’. Jean Gebser, scholar of consciousness and visionary thinker, uses the term ‘mutation’ to describe the emergence of dimensionality in ideas or forms.
Butoh Mutations builds upon the legacy of Japanese Butoh dance with both curiosity and reverence, respecting the work and practices of the dancers I’ve learned from and opening them up to unpredictable evolutions. The mutation also happens by incorporating elements from the knowledge traditions I’ve inherited. This includes Vedic mantra chants, Yogacara practices and the Daoist tradition of Tai-ch’i.
In the classes we combine these practices through free improvisation and choreographic experiments guided by the path of non-dual inquiry. Each class begins with a physical and/or vocal warm-up followed by dance exercises alone or in groups as well as opportunities to observe others’ work, sharing, performing and short discussions.
OPEN PERFORMANCE EVENT 13 July 2022: The season culminates with an open performance evening for invited friends and family. Those who wish to work towards this event must attend at least 7 classes and the last two classes before the performance.
The Butoh classes in London are open to all ages (16 +) and abilities, no previous experience is necessary. You don’t need to have attended the first season to join. Please wear comfortable clothes to move in.
